Film buffs may perk up at seeing the new video clip for Beyonce and Jay-Z's "On the Run II" tour, released Monday. Nestled in the 45-second video (and also used as a promotional still for the tour) is a shot of the couple on a motorcycle adorned with a longhorn's skull—what Quartz says is a "direct nod" to a 1973 film out of Senegal called Touki Bouki. The movie directed by the late Djibril Diop Mambety chronicles what Complex calls a "Bonnie and Clyde-esque" couple who plot to steal money to flee Dakar for France.
The fictional couple rides a similar skull-sporting motorbike, as noticed by cultural critic Suede on Instagram. Quartz points out the similarities between the visually compelling style of both Mambety's filmmaking and Beyonce and Jay-Z's music videos, as well as Beyonce's constant looks toward African culture for inspiration for her work. The site also notes, however, that the superstar duo won't be bringing their tour—which starts June 6 and hits the UK, Europe, and North America—to any cities in Africa.
