Every state has been home to at least one major historical event—yes, even Nebraska—and 24/7 Wall St. has picked the most majorly historical event for each of the 50 states. The website chose the events—which range from court battles to actual battles, scientific discoveries to natural disasters—by looking at the political, economic, and cultural impacts they had. It ignored events that could have happened anywhere—like the signing of international treaties—and favored events that could have only happened in a certain state. Here are 10 of those major historical events and their states:
- Arkansas: The desegregation of Little Rock schools in 1957
- Colorado: The legalization of marijuana in 2012
- Indiana: The Native American uprising of 1811
- Louisiana: Hurricane Katrina in 2005
- Michigan: The Model T built in 1908
- New Hampshire: The first government independent from England in 1776
- North Dakota: The last of the great bison hunts in 1882
- Rhode Island: King Philip's War in 1675
- Tennessee: The Scopes Monkey Trial in 1925
- Wyoming: The establishment of Yellowstone National Park in 1872
