Cierra Forney wasn't happy when her 13-year-old son started acting "entitled," "like he's too good to shop at Walmart or making snarky comments about kids at school who shop at the [G]oodwill," the Georgia mom wrote on Facebook—alongside a photo of her son inside a Goodwill store, holding hangers full of clothes in his hands. Forney decided that to teach him "money isn't everything," she would make him spend $20 of his own money to buy clothes at the thrift store and wear them to school all week. "He isn't happy and shed a few tears but I firmly believe in 15 years he will look back and laugh at the day his [m]om made him shop at [G]oodwill," Forney wrote in the post, which has now gone viral. "If you have to degrade other people because of where they shop, then you too will shop there."
Most of the comments on the post, which has so far been shared nearly 240,000 times, are positive, according to KFOR. But in a followup post Forney—who noted in her original post that she loves Goodwill—said she has received some negative feedback. "All the public shaming and saying my son will grow to hate me, sue me and later kill me are just awful. My son and I have an amazing relationship. He tells me everything and trusts me wholeheartedly," she wrote. "I didn't do this to punish him. It wasn't to show him that [G]oodwill isn't a good place to shop. I did this to teach him that money and name brands don't change who we are as people. He can still be the amazing, adorable, loved kid that he is WITHOUT the expensive stores!"
