The Villanova Wildcats turned their second national title in three years into a rout with a 79-62 victory over Michigan in the national championship game of the NCAA Tournament Monday night. "I thought we played our best game in the championship game," Villanova coach Jay Wright says. Villanova started flat at both ends, unable to slow the Wolverines off the dribble or come close to matching their Final Four three-point record against Kansas two days earlier, the AP reports. But Donte DiVincenzo provided an immediate offensive spark, lobbing in long three-pointers and driving hard to the basket after entering the game at 17:38. He finished 10 for 15 from the floor, 5 of 7 from the three-point arc.
On a frustrating night for national player of the year Jalen Brunson, DiVincenzo, the 6-foot-5 sophomore guard who has been called the Big Ragu and the Michael Jordan of Delaware, became the catalyst to a title. DiVincenzo had 18 points in 18 first-half minutes and one blocked shot. "Sometimes those individual performances just beat you and you just say, OK, you take off your hat and say, good game," Michigan coach John Beilein says. Villanova University students flooded the streets around campus to celebrate the win. In anticipation of celebrations, light poles around the university had been greased, but that didn't stop some fans from climbing them anyway.
