We've heard from Andrew McCabe on the "cruelty" directed at him from President Trump. Now the ex-FBI deputy director's wife is speaking out, defending both her husband and herself against what she says are Trump's "false and utterly absurd" attacks. ABC News sets up the backstory, explaining Trump's Twitter rants against Andrew McCabe's integrity, as well as against Jill McCabe, who Trump insisted benefited from campaign contributions from "Clinton Puppets" (including then-Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe) during her 2015 run for the Virginia Senate. Trump has also implied those contributions influenced Andrew McCabe's decisions in the FBI probe of Hillary Clinton. That all "makes no sense," Jill McCabe writes in an op-ed for the Washington Post, in which she details how she made the decision to go from emergency room doctor to "accidental politician" in her quest to expand Medicaid.
Specifically, she outlines how, after consulting with ethics experts, her husband steered clear of her campaign, never attending a fundraiser or even driving her to events (she says he once donned a campaign T-shirt for a family pic). She adds all contributions were public record and that her husband didn't even get involved in the Clinton probe until after she'd lost the Senate race. "To have my personal reputation and integrity and those of my family attacked this way is beyond horrible," she writes. What the "destructive lies" from Trump and others have done: ensured she stays away from politics. "I made the decision to run for office because I was trying to help people," she laments. "Instead, it turned into something that was used to attack our family, my husband's career, and the entire FBI." Her op-ed is here.
