Amal Clooney opens up about the early days of her relationship with her husband, George, in a new Vogue cover story. She met the actor when she accompanied a friend to Clooney's house on Lake Como, Italy; he recalls that he not only found the acclaimed human rights attorney beautiful but also "fascinating" and "brilliant": "I was taken with her from the moment I saw her." They struck up a friendship, emailing back and forth, with George often writing to her as his dog, Einstein, pretending to be in need of legal assistance from her. Eventually, she realized their friendship was evolving, telling a cousin, "There's a bit of a romance brewing." George came to visit her in London, and they saw each other every day. "It felt like the most natural thing in the world," she says.

George acknowledges that before meeting Amal, "I’d pretty much committed to the idea of never marrying again." But it was "immediately" clear to him that "something was very different" with her, he says. During a safari trip together to Africa, "Some giraffes walked up to her," he recalls. "They just came out of the blue. I took a picture of her, and she was smiling. I said to my buddy Ben, 'You know, I think I should ask her to marry me.' And Ben said, 'I think that’s a good idea.'" Amal also talks about the couple's twins, Ella and Alexander—she never schedules calls before 8am so that she, George, and the babies can spend mornings together in bed, she says; George sometimes refers to the twins as "the knuckleheads."
