A militant group in Somalia on Wednesday enacted a brutal sentence on a woman accused of having multiple husbands. Militants with al-Shabab buried the woman up to her neck, then pelted her to death with stones, while residents in the town of Sablale looked on. The death sentence came after 30-year-old Shukri Abdullahi Warsame was brought to court alongside nine men who claimed her as their wife, reports Reuters. A 10th husband died, while another is said to have divorced her, reports Somalia's Garowe Online.
Under Islamic law, men can have up to four wives, but women are banned from having more than one husband, and a divorce is only granted with permission from the husband or a religious court, reports the BBC. Al-Shabab, which practices a strict version of Sharia law, is known to sentence to death women accused of adultery and other crimes. Reuters notes that courts set up by al-Shabab block legal representation, as well as appeals. Garowe Online reports Abdullahi had eight children. (More al-Shabab stories.)
