Harry Cursed at the Altar —and Broke a 30-Year Tradition

In case you slept in, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry had an understated, private get-together Saturday morning and got married among friends at City Hall. Kidding: Their marriage at St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle, near London, was a major international media event filled with beloved moments that are rippling through social media. Among the highlights:

  • Facing his radiant bride-to-be at the altar, Harry was seen telling her, "You look amazing. I'm so lucky," reports USA Today. He was also cheeky enough to say what looks like, "I'm sh--ing it"—a video clip that has "already gone viral," per the Cut.
  • The Most Reverend Michael Bruce Curry of Chicago gave an electrifying sermon at the ceremony. "There’s power in love," he said. "Do not underestimate it. Anyone who has ever fallen in love, knows what I mean. But think about love in any form or experience of it. It actually feels good to be loved, and to express love. There is something right about it. And there’s a reason." See it on YouTube.

  • A propos, Saturday's ceremony was the most diverse royal wedding in history, with a black cellist (Sheku Kanneh-Mason), preacher (Curry) and a gospel group called The Kingdom Choir that sang "This Little Light of Mine" and "Stand by Me."
  • Markle and Harry tore up a nearly 30-year royal tradition of royal couples having their first married smooch on the balcony of Buckingham Palace. Instead, they stole one on the steps of St. George's Chapel right after the wedding. Then they greeted "adoring onlookers" on a 25-minute carriage trip through Windsor, says USA Today.
  • Harry broke yet another rule by keeping his beard while wearing his Blues and Royals dress uniform. "According to Kensington Palace, he got the go-ahead to wear the uniform from the Queen herself," says Esquire. "We can only wonder if she approved the facial hair, too."

  • The children of Prince William and Kate Middleton stole the moment when Harry and Markle left the chapel as a married couple, Harper's Bazaar reports. Princess Charlotte, 3, gave a big royal wave as her 4-year-old brother Prince George appeared to grimace behind her. (See it on CNN.) "Looks like weddings aren't his thing," says Harpers of George. "But we still love him."
  • Celebrity appearances? Of course: Oprah Winfrey donned a pink frock with feathered hat while Amal Clooney, accompanying husband George, opted for a canary yellow dress with brimmed hat and netting. Other celebs included Serena Williams, Carey Mulligan, and Victoria Beckham.
  • Others are relishing simpler things, like Harry tearing up at the altar or the body language between him and Markle as they listen to "Stand by Me."
