Before murdering five people in a Maryland newsroom, Jarrod Ramos signed and mailed a document describing his goal of "killing every person present," police say. "You were too cowardly to confront those lies, and this is your receipt. I told you so," reads the June 28 document sent to the Capital Gazette's former lawyer, with instructions to share it with the paper's former publisher, reports the Baltimore Sun. Signed by Ramos, the document is styled as a "Motion for Reconsideration" by Maryland's top court, which in 2016 refused to hear a defamation case Ramos filed against the Capital, police say. An attached letter is addressed to retired Judge Charles Moylan Jr., who described Ramos' "fundamental failure to understand what defamation law is" when siding against him.
"Welcome, Mr. Moylan, to your unexpected legacy: YOU should have died," the letter reads, per the Sun. "Friends forever, Jarrod W. Ramos." While Anne Arundel County police say threatening documents including Ramos' name and return address were also sent to the Baltimore City Court and Maryland Court of Special Appeals, the 38-year-old apparently addressed Moylan a second time moments before the shooting. "F— you, leave me alone," he wrote on Twitter, tagging "an account he appears to have created in Moylan's name," the Sun reports. Ramos is now charged with five counts of murder. Meanwhile, people began returning to work Monday at the Annapolis building that includes the Capital Gazette's offices. "It's on everybody's minds," one employee tells WJLA of the shooting.
