Museum Bids to Turn eBay to Art

Ebay as high culture? The Shelburne Museum in Vermont is showcasing the online auction winnings of celebs such as Jerry Seinfeld, Bianca Jagger, and John Lurie, in an exhibition titled "Got eBay? Celebrity Collections Created Online." Museum director Stephen Jost gave a group of big names $1000 each to bid on eBay items and create a personal collection, which together form the art project.

Funny man Seinfeld bid on vintage Porsche posters and an early-70s Heuer Camaro watch. Mick's ex-wife Bianca Jagger assembled more than a dozen objects connected to American history and human rights. Musician and artist John Lurie listed two of his own prints on eBay and then bought them for $500 each. "It's such blatant self promotion," he mused. (More Bianca Jagger stories.)
