Twitter and its Periscope streaming platform haven't joined the Silicon Valley crackdown on what is being described as "hate speech" from Alex Jones and his InfoWars channel. Apple, Facebook, and YouTube all removed InfoWars content in what a tweet from the conspiracy theorist's channel called a "coordinated effort" that had "nothing to do" with enforcing hate speech rules. A Twitter spokesperson tells CNBC that Jones' accounts do not violate the company's policies, but Twitter will take action if it needs do.
YouTube banned Jones and several InfoWars channels Monday soon after Facebook and Apple did the same, Mashable reports. Jones, whose YouTube channel had 2.4 million subscribers, had already received a "strike" last year. Spotify was one of the first to ditch the controversial radio host, who has claimed that the Sandy Hook mass shooting was a hoax. Jones used Twitter on Monday to protest the ban—and to encourage people to buy the supplements he sells. "The censorship of Infowars just vindicates everything we’ve been saying," he tweeted, calling on supporters to support free speech against "tyranny." "We’re all Alex Jones now," he said.
