A vicious attack between firefighters this summer has triggered three investigations and left New York fire officials in shock, the New York Post reports. Insiders say over a dozen FDNY firefighters attacked three Bronx rivals so brutally on June 6 that a captain watching video of it had to go outside and compose himself. "It was one of the most severe beatings they’ve seen on tape," says an FDNY source who recalled the reaction of Capt. Michael Nigro of Engine 68. "They can’t believe one of the guys wasn't killed." Seems two firefighters from Rescue Co. 3 held down Adam Soler, 35, of Engine 68, while a Co. 3 colleague repeatedly kicked Soler. "Someone grabbed [Soler's] head and started pounding it into the pavement," a source says.
Soler has been on medical leave with a concussion ever since, while one attacker may have broken a foot by kicking the curb. But none have been fired or arrested. Apparently it all started earlier that day when firefighters were celebrating at Billy's bar near Yankee Stadium after an awards ceremony. Amid rising tensions a Rescue 3 captain called a black Engine 68 firefighter the N-word, and soon fists were flying, the Daily News reports. That night, Soler and two firefighters from Ladder 49 went to Rescue 3 on Washington Avenue to complain and ran into the beatdown. Now the FDNY, Bronx DA, and other New York officials are investigating. "Everyone and anyone who engaged in this outrageous behavior will be held accountable," says Nigro. (More firefighters stories.)
