As Turkey airs its suspicions that Washington Post contributor Jamal Khashoggi was brutally murdered and dismembered inside Saudi Arabia's Istanbul consulate by a team of 15 Saudi agents, Reuters digs into the situation. One major line of investigation it reports is being chased down: Khashoggi's black Apple Watch. The 59-year-old was wearing it when he entered the consulate on Oct. 2, and it was linked to a mobile phone that he gave his fiancee to hold while he went inside. A Turkish official tells Reuters that Turkey does not have the watch, but it does have the phone, and "intelligence services, the prosecutor's office, and a technology team are working on this" to see whether any of the data it can typically transmit, say, about location and heart rate, could be gleaned from it.
That could depend on "the model of watch, whether it was connected to the internet, and whether it is near enough an iPhone to synchronize," Reuters notes. It also dives into the chain of events that brought Khashoggi to the consulate in the first place: He was to marry Hatice Cengiz this week; under Turkish law, the divorced journalist needed paperwork verifying he did not currently have a wife, and he apparently decided the consulate in Turkey would be the safest place for him to get the documentation. He went to an initial appointment on Sept. 28 and was told to return the following week. Meanwhile, President Trump on Wednesday says Washington is "demanding" answers from Saudi Arabia and says he has invited Cenqiz to visit the White House.
