Thursday's proceedings centered on how money should be split between the prince and princess, who have two sons, according to the Express. The princess, a native speaker of Luxembourgish, reportedly addressed the judge in English, making her case with a closing speech that lasted about an hour. She later declined to explain why she did not have counsel. The prince has a legal team that gave arguments on his behalf.
The Express notes that the 2006 marriage between Louis and Tessy "thrust the royal house of Luxembourg into crisis." They were both teens, and Tessy was a commoner. The prince, who was third in the line of succession, had to renounce his claim to the throne. For much of their marriage, the pair lived in the US and the UK. In 2016, the couple announced that they were separating. The princess cited the prince's "unreasonable behavior" as the reason for the separation, Hello reports. Early last year, a judge granted them a so-called "quickie" divorce. "My divorce was definitely one of the most difficult situations I have ever faced," the princess said previously, per the Express.
