Nathan Carman's story is a weird one, and it just got weirder. The Vermont man was in July 2017 sued by his aunts to keep him from inheriting millions in the wake of the deaths of his maternal grandfather and mother—with his aunts accusing him of murdering that grandfather. Connecticut real estate developer John Chakalos, 87, was found with bullets in his head in 2013, and a lawyer for Carman on Monday aired what the Hartford Courant calls an "alternative theory" to a murder that, as this point, no one has been charged with: that "Mistress Y" was somehow involved. (It's a bit confusing, but the AP explains the court documents were filed in Rhode Island, not in connection with the sisters' suit, but as part of an insurance case involving the boat Carman's mother is assumed to have drowned on while on a mother-son fishing trip with Carman in 2016.)

As for Mistress Y, Chakalos allegedly spent the weekend with the 25-year-old at a Connecticut casino and gave her $3,500 for breast surgery. But the key detail may be a 19-minute phone call she had with Chakalos on the night he was killed. She told police it was "sexual" in nature; Carman's lawyers says Chakalos interrupted the call to say goodbye to his grandson, who was leaving the home. The lawyer alleges "Mistress Y" knew about the cash Chakalos kept on hand in the home and that she could have masterminded a robbery or unknowingly caused one by telling someone about it. The lawyer is seeking to depose her. A lawyer for the three aunts had this reaction: "Nathan’s shameful attack on his grandfather today shows there is no depth to which he will not sink."
