Authorities are warning people to think before they act after the second death in two days of people falling through ice to save their dogs. A man in his 20s died Monday after falling through an icy pond at an apartment complex in Indianapolis, where his dog had gone exploring, reports USA Today. Divers located the man, who died at a hospital, some 30 feet from shore in about 15 feet of water. Two residents who also fell through the ice in attempts to help escaped on their own, as did the man's husky, one of two dogs he owned, per the Indianapolis Star. A day earlier, a 38-year-old mother of three was discovered drowned 250 miles north in Wyoming, Mich., after her dog returned home from a walk without her.

Tracy Cashman, an administrative assistant responsible for organizing student transportation for the Godfrey-Lee School District, is believed to have tried to rescue her golden doodle from thin ice during a nightly walk Saturday, reports MLive. Her body was found early Sunday, hours after the dog returned home alone and soaking wet around 9pm, roughly 30 minutes after the pair had departed, per the Zionsville Times Sentinel. "She probably didn't even think about it. If that dog was struggling, she was going to save her dog," Cashman's mother tells the paper. "It would be instinct." Cashman "loved animals, the outdoors, and most of all her family," according to her obituary. (A cop rescued this dog from a freezing lake.)
