House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has issued a new invitation to President Donald Trump to give his State of the Union speech on Feb. 5, the AP reports. Pelosi said in her formal letter that she and Trump spoke Monday and agreed on the new date. She wrote: "In our conversation today, we agreed on Feb. 5." The AP later reported Trump sent a letter back to Pelosi saying it was his "great honor" to accept the invitation to speak before a joint session of Congress next week. The speech, originally scheduled for Jan. 29, was postponed because of the partial government shutdown.
Trump and Congress reached a deal Friday to reopen the government, which had been Pelosi's condition for allowing Trump to speak. The House and Senate still must pass a resolution officially inviting Trump to speak to a joint session. "We have a great story to tell and yet, great goals to achieve!" Trump said in his letter to Pelosi. (Trump doesn't sound too optimistic on a border deal being reached before the three-week deal to fund the government comes to an end.)
