Fans of restaurateur and lifestyle sage B. Smith, a 69-year-old former model once called "the black Martha Stewart," are unhappy with her new lifestyle, and they blame her husband. Dan Gasby, who also is Smith's business partner, is caring for his wife, who has Alzheimer’s disease, as a Washington Post profile discusses. Their restaurants are closed, and her appearances waned as the disease, diagnosed six years ago, took its toll. In the meantime, Gasby kept fans informed of their struggles on social media. Then, last month, he told them that he has a girlfriend when he shared a photo on Facebook of himself and Alex Lerner. Gasby was unapologetic, using a caption inspired by a rap song by 50 Cent and the Game: "Hate it or love it. You can debate, but for me, I’m feelin' great." He added the hashtag: #whylie.
Gasby says he's told his wife that Lerner is his girlfriend, but she didn't seem to understand. Lerner often stays in their home, which drew its own condemnation. "You don’t bring your mistress in the house where your WIFE lives. She’s not dead," one critic wrote on Facebook this month. Fans have called for court intervention, some saying that Gasby's wife is funding his and Lerner's lifestyle; some have called particular attention to the fact that Lerner is white. Gasby says this is the reality of living with a spouse who's deteriorating mentally. “If This Is Us and Modern Family came together, it would be us," he says. Gasby has lashed out at trolls on Facebook, saying, "I love my wife but I can’t let her take away my life!" He also posted that "BSmith’s worst day is 10x better than you’ve experienced."
