President Trump responded to Elizabeth Warren's Saturday announcement that she is officially a 2020 contender with a tweet that has drawn plenty of attention, both for what it certainly says as well as what some claim it appears to say. "Today Elizabeth Warren, sometimes referred to by me as Pocahontas, joined the race for President," tweeted Trump Saturday. "Will she run as our first Native American presidential candidate, or has she decided that after 32 years, this is not playing so well anymore? See you on the campaign TRAIL, Liz!"
The clear part is that Trump was again mocking Warren for her claims of Native American ancestry. What the media says the tweet might contain, though, is a reference to the Trail of Tears with the all-capitalized "TRAIL." The Hill reports as many as 8,000 Cherokee died over a 20-year span beginning in 1830 as they were forced from the Southeastern US to Oklahoma, in what was known as the Trail of Tears. USA Today reports the Indian Removal Act became law under Andrew Jackson, whose portrait Trump selected for the Oval Office. (More President Trump stories.)
