An odd story out of California that involves a Scottish man who vanished while apparently on vacation in the States has more questions than answers. Law and Crime reports that officials in Monterey County received a missing-person report on Feb. 25 from the teen son of Kim Gordon, with the boy telling authorities he'd gone for a hike at Monastery Beach while his dad went for a swim, and that when he got back, Gordon was gone. A two-day search for the man at the beach, which is known for its dangerous conditions, turned up nothing—but "as we dug deeper ... [the story] started to crumble and fall apart," a Monterey County Sheriff's Office spokesman tells KSBW. Not only was it unclear how the two got to Monterey County in the first place, but it soon was discovered Gordon, believed to be in his 50s, is wanted in Scotland on 24 counts of rape.

That's why investigators now think Gordon may have faked his own death to avoid prosecution. The Scottish Sun, which notes Gordon had been set to appear in an Edinburgh court later this month, reports he's a well-recognized jewelry street vendor in Inverness. A spokesman for the Crown Office says "there are active solemn proceedings" for Gordon, who's also known by the aliases Kim Vincent and Kem Vincent Avis. The Metro paints a picture of contrasts about the Scot, reporting on his many fundraising efforts for charity and even a description of him as a "hero" for stopping a man from leaping to his death off a building almost 20 years ago. Gordon's 17-year-old son, meanwhile, has returned to Scotland, though US officials say he could face charges of filing a false police report and aiding and abetting a wanted fugitive.
