Today's media flap involves liberal advocacy group Media Matters going after a familiar target—Fox News, and specifically host Tucker Carlson. The group released a video in which it compiles comments Tucker made on the Bubba The Love Sponge radio show between 2006 and 2011. "Misogynistic and perverted" is how Media Matters describes them, but Carlson is unapologetic. “Media Matters caught me saying something naughty on a radio show more than a decade ago," he says in a statement, per Variety. "Rather than express the usual ritual contrition, how about this: I’m on television every weeknight live for an hour. If you want to know what I think, you can watch." He adds that "anyone who disagrees with my views is welcome to come on and explain why."
Among other things, Carlson talks about the Warren Jeffs case in his radio call-ins. "Look, just to make it absolutely clear," he says. "I am not defending underage marriage at all. I just don't think it's the same thing exactly as pulling a child from a bus stop and sexually assaulting that child." At another point, Carlson repeats the radio host's use of the word "c---y" to describe Martha Stewart's daughter Alexis and said he "wanted to give her the spanking she so desperately needs." (The Wrap notes that Carlson called out Samantha Bee for her own flap over the c-word, at one point saying, "I don’t know any man who uses that word because it is kind of the one word that is actually degrading.") Carlson worked at MSNBC before being hired by Fox in 2009, notes the Washington Post. (The Fox host drew flak recently for his comments on immigration.)
