Paul Ryan has tried to make clear that he expects President Trump to be triumphant in 2020, after possibly leaving a different impression earlier. "His record of accomplishment is why he'll win re-election," Ryan tweeted Wednesday. During a lecture in Florida Monday, the former House speaker had said: "The person who defines that race is going to win the race. If this is about Donald Trump and his personality, he isn't going to win it." The current House GOP leader, Kevin McCarthy, had disagreed with Ryan's first assessment, per the Washington Post. He used wording much like Ryan's second try: "This president has a lot of successes to talk about, and that's why he will be re-elected." In his tweet, Ryan further explained his initial comments: "To be clear, GOP wins elections when they’re about ideas not when they’re personality contests like Dems & media want."
