Sam Smith is "not male or female," the English singer revealed in a recent Instagram interview with Jameela Jamil. "I think I flow somewhere in between. It's all on the spectrum," he says, per the BBC and Entertainment Weekly. "I've always had a little bit of a war going within my body and my mind. I do think like a woman sometimes, in my head. Sometimes I've questioned 'Do I want a sex change?'" Ultimately he realized he's non-binary, which he describes as being "your own special creation" and not identifying as one particular gender, though he currently still uses male pronouns. "When I saw the word non-binary/genderqueer and I read into it and I heard these people speaking, I was like, 'F—, that is me," says Smith, 26.

As for how this all affects his dating life, "you fall in love with people, not genitals," he says, noting that he's dated men who identify as heterosexual. He also spoke to body image, saying he's struggled with it from childhood due to things like carrying "extra estrogen" in his chest: "I am feminine in many ways and I've always resented that," he says. "I'll never look like that because there's a bit of a woman in me who won't let me look like that. I put on weight in places women put on weight." He says that realization "spring-boarded everything, actually. That's me looking at myself and thinking maybe I'm not a man, maybe I'm not a woman, maybe I'm just me." Smith has been posting about body image issues on his own Instagram as well. (Smith sparked an uproar when he dissed Michael Jackson.)
