The weekend saw not one but two college students fall to their deaths. Andrea Norton—a junior at Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa—was in Arkansas as part of a class activity when she fell roughly 100 feet from a cliff Saturday morning. The group was in the Ozark National Forest and near Hawksbill Crag; Newton County Sheriff Glenn Wheeler tells the Sioux City Journal she was apparently moving to a different part of the crag for a photo when she fell. Wheeler spoke of the area's dangers to ABC News, saying "one stumble or misstep is all it can take to turn a great day into a tragic one."
The Journal reports the crag is so named because it looks much like a hawk's bill. According to Wheeler, it's a popular destination that has seen other deaths and incidents over recent years. KOTA quotes Wheeler as saying, "This is the second callout to the area this year that involved a serious fall, and the season is just beginning." Norton, a South Dakota native, was an environmental science major and a member of the Briar Cliff's volleyball team. "#22 on the courts, #1 in our hearts. Thank you for the prayers, calls, texts and emails," tweeted the team. (More fall stories.)
