A House panel is using its power to demand access to President Trump's financial records. On Monday, however, Trump sued to block the effort and said Democrats were abusing their power, reports the Hill. The legal fight stems from a move last week by Rep. Elijah Cummings, chair of the House Oversight Committee. Cummings issued a subpoena to Mazars USA, the accounting firm that handles the president's business interests, reports the Washington Post. Cummings justified the move as necessary to corroborate testimony from former Trump attorney Michael Cohen, per NBC News, but Trump's lawsuit says the move goes too far.
"Democrats are using their new control of congressional committees to investigate every aspect of President Trump's personal finances, businesses, and even his family," the complaint reads. "Instead of working with the President to pass bipartisan legislation that would actually benefit Americans, House Democrats are singularly obsessed with finding something they can use to damage the President politically." The subpoena seeks 10 years' worth of financial records, and Mazars said last week that it "will respect the legal process and fully comply with its legal obligations."
