A recent sliver of hope in the US opioid crisis emerged in the form of a substantial drop in prescription opioid use in 2018. But that doesn't mean the country's drug epidemic is anywhere near over. Drug abuse continues to run rampant, and WalletHub looked at the problem state by state, examining nearly two dozen metrics across three categories: the overall prevalence of drug use and addiction in each state, numbers regarding law enforcement efforts (including drug arrests and where employee testing is carried out), and drug health issues and rehab. Plagued most significantly: the nation's capital. See the nine states that also ended up in the top 10:

  1. District of Columbia
  2. Michigan
  3. Missouri
  4. West Virginia
  5. Indiana
  6. Arkansas
  7. New Hampshire
  8. Kentucky
  9. Colorado
  10. New Mexico
See how other states fared here. (TV commercials for prescription drugs are about to see a big change.)
