The meat-substitute movement has entered the world of pizza. Little Caesars is the first national chain to offer a faux-meat topping—Impossible Sausage, reports Business Insider. It will be available on the $12 Impossible Supreme Pizza in select locations for a trial run, per Fortune. The plant-based "sausage" comes from Impossible Foods, the same company that made a splash with the well-reviewed Impossible Burger at Burger King. The other big company in the movement, Beyond Meats, previously teamed with the Tim Hortons chain for meatless breakfast sausages.
"It feels like we're at that tipping point," says Ed Gleich, chief marketing officer of Little Caesars. "We want to be ... the first brand out as it tips." For now, only stores in Fort Meyers, Fla.; Albuquerque, NM; and Yakima, Wash., will carry the Impossible Sausage in a test for about a month, reports the Detroit Free Press. If the Burger King model is any guide, the product will go national soon, and the chain expects to add more plant-based products down the line. (More Little Caesars stories.)
