Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards, a Democrat, signed the state's new legislation restricting abortion into law Thursday. The measure prohibits abortion when a fetal heartbeat is detected, as early as six weeks of pregnancy, and allows no exceptions, per the AP. The state's three clinics that perform abortions can continue to do so; the Louisiana law takes effect only if the law in neighboring Mississippi is upheld by a federal appeals court. The Mississippi law has been blocked by a judge.
Edwards, who was elected in 2015 as an anti-abortion candidate, per NBC, is up for reelection this fall. The state's Democratic chair has criticized the bill but not mentioned Edwards by name, and the party supports his reelection. After the bill passed Wednesday, Edwards tweeted that he would sign it and that he has been "true to my word and my beliefs on this issue." But Edwards added that "being pro-life means more than just being pro-birth," and called on legislators who voted for it to help build a state "that cares for the least among us and provides more opportunity for everyone."
