"There was a relationship between a man and a woman between four walls," says Brazilian soccer superstar Neymar, who the New York Times reports is being accused of rape by a woman who's accusing him of paying for her to fly from Brazil to Paris, only to rape her in a hotel room on May 15. She says they "touched each other, but in a given moment Neymar became aggressive and, with violence, had sexual intercourse against the victim's will," reports the AP. She is filing her complaint in Brazil; she says she was too traumatized to file charges in Paris, and instead returned home two days later.
Neymar is vigorously denying the accusation, calling it an extortion attempt, and released a video on Instagram making his case, along with several intimate images of the woman that they allegedly exchanged on WhatsApp—including some from the day after the alleged attack. "On the next day, nothing happened," Neymar says. "I hope investigators read the messages and see what happened." Neymar's father and manager called the accusation a "tough moment" that could "snowball." It comes amid other turmoil for the soccer star: He was recently removed as Brazil's captain after a fight with a fan, but is preparing to lead his team into South America's flagship tournament, the Copa América.
