DeWayne Craddock resigned from his job with Virginia Beach's municipal government Friday morning—but not in a way that made anybody suspect he was going to massacre his colleagues hours later. There was "nothing out of the ordinary" in the short email, in which the 40-year-old civil engineer "merely submitted his two weeks’ notice," a source tells the Washington Post. "There was no foreshadowing of anything that resulted the rest of the day." Authorities say they are still trying to figure out a motive in the mass shooting at the municipal building, which left 11 city employees and a contractor dead before Craddock was killed in a gun battle with police. "Right now we do not have anything glaring," Virginia Beach Police Chief James A. Cervera said Sunday.
City Manager Dave Hansen says it's not clear why Craddock resigned, still less why he wanted to kill his colleagues. He says a "very thorough review" of Craddock's personnel file uncovered nothing unusual. "To my knowledge, the perpetrator’s performance was satisfactory," he says. Christi Dewar, a clerk who worked across the hall from Craddock, tells the Post that she knew of no incidents involving Craddock in the days before the shooting and "there was absolutely no warning whatsoever." Engineering technician Joseph Scott tells CNN that Craddock seemed completely normal when he encountered him brushing his teeth in the bathroom soon before the shooting. "I asked, 'Any plans for the weekend?' And he said, 'No,'" Scott says. "I said, 'Well, have a good day.' And he said the same to me." (Authorities say the firearms Craddock used were legally purchased.)
