Here's What Killed US Couple Found Dead in Hotel Room

The Maryland couple found dead last week in their Dominican Republic hotel room died of respiratory failure and pulmonary edema, autopsies have found. Pulmonary edema is caused by excess fluid in the lungs. Officials are still awaiting toxicology and histopathology reports on Edward Nathael Holmes, 63, and Cynthia Ann Day, 49, ABC News reports. Blood pressure medication was found in their room in San Pedro de Macorís. According to local media, a hotel worker said Holmes complained at the front desk of feeling ill Thursday, but declined to see a doctor, Fox 5 DC reports. The engaged couple was found dead that same day, the day they were scheduled to depart for home, when they failed to check out, USA Today reports. (Another awful story out of Punta Cana.)
