There are many elements to safety, and in determining this year's safest states in America, WalletHub looked at dozens of them. The site compared all 50 states across 52 safety indicators from the areas of personal and residential safety (things like terrorist attacks, mass shootings, violent crimes, overdoses, suicides), financial safety (including rates of insurance, unemployment, and debt), road safety (car accidents, etc.), workplace safety, and emergency preparedness. The states were given a score on a 100-point scale. Here are the top 10—and the bottom 10.

  1. Minnesota: 64.43
  2. Vermont: 64.32
  3. Maine: 62.53
  4. Utah: 62.48

  6. New Hampshire: 61.19
  7. Iowa: 60.85
  8. Hawaii: 60.29
  9. Massachusetts: 58.98
  10. Wyoming: 57.31

And the bottom 10:
