A Florida woman who apparently feared for her life was arrested last weekend after turning in her husband's handguns, WFTV reports. Courtney Irby, 32, took her husband Joseph's weapons to Lakeland police on June 15, telling officers that Joseph had been arrested the day before "for trying to run me over with his car," per a police report. That's when she admitted to taking the guns without permission from his apartment. "So, are you telling me you committed an armed burglary?" an officer asked, per WKMG. She said yes, adding that "he wasn't going to turn them in so I am doing it." Which is when police arrested her and charged her with grand theft of a firearm and armed burglary.

Sitting in Polk County Jail, the husband approved pressing charges against her. His own arrest stemmed from an argument the couple had after a courthouse divorce hearing the day before. Police say Joseph, 35, followed his wife as she drove away, yelling and screaming as he rammed the back of her vehicle and tried pushing her off the road. She hysterically called police, saying she feared for her life; he was soon arrested and apparently called her a "man hater." Courtney was released five days after her arrest on $5,000 bail, Time reports. Now media reports are emphasizing the danger to domestic-violence survivors, with one report finding that an average of over 525 women were killed annually by an intimate partner with a firearm between 2006 and 2016.
