Fotis Dulos and his girlfriend, Michelle Troconis, are both charged in the disappearance of Dulos' estranged wife, Jennifer, and police say the pair was seen on surveillance video discarding items with Jennifer Dulos' blood on them. But Fotis Dulos has a very different theory: He says his wife, who was last seen dropping their kids off at school May 24, wrote a novel similar to Gone Girl, in which the main character fakes her own disappearance and frames her husband for her murder, and he suggests, via his lawyer, that Jennifer Dulos did the same thing. A spokesperson says on behalf of the Connecticut woman's family and friends that such claims are "false and irresponsible" and only serve to hurt the couple's five children. The spokesperson says Jennifer Dulos, who has an MFA in writing from NYU, did write a novel, in 2002 before she started dating Fotis Dulos, but that it "is not a mystery" and "has nothing to do with Gone Girl."
"We have been provided a very dark, 500-plus page novel Jennifer wrote," Fotis Dulos' lawyer says in a statement, per NBC News, without expanding on how the novel was discovered. "We don’t know what had become of Jennifer, but the Gone Girl hypothesis is very much on our mind." In her rebuttal statement, the family rep says, per the Hartford Courant, "I read Jennifer’s novel in installments as she was completing the manuscript. ... Trying to tie Jennifer’s absence to a book she wrote more than 17 years ago makes no sense. This is not fiction or a movie. This is real life." The statement further calls Fotis Dulos' implication insulting, since evidence shows Jennifer Dulos was the victim of a "violent attack." In recent weeks, search teams have scoured a pond and a trash facility for evidence. (Jennifer Dulos was said to be "terrified" before vanishing.)
