A restaurant's special "girlfriend" offer is lighting up the Internet and sparking debate about possible sexism. It all began June 28 when Nick Chisler posted the "My Girlfriend is Not Hungry" listing from an Arkansas diner on Facebook, per CBS News. The cheeky menu option at Mama D's Diner charges $4.25 for adding "extra French fries to your entree, and fried chicken wings (2) or fried cheese sticks (3)." Some 22,000 shares and roughly 5,700 comments later, Chisler's post is a hot topic on social and mainstream media. Online comments run the gamut from a Facebook user who called it "an option you should always order ... you know I get snacky" to a Twitter user who said it's a "saving marriages" kind of idea.
But the New York Post finds others who aren't amused, like one who posted "More like my *boyfriend* isn't hungry" and another who said "It works both ways." On Eater, Jaya Saxena blasts the offer for fueling the notion that women are "always being coy" and, in a worst-case scenario, are "secretly 'asking for it.'" The story went all the way to the Middle East, where Gulf News quotes women in Egypt and Jordan who give it a pass. "I'm not offended by it but since we live in a world where everything and everyone is overly sensitive about the silliest things—I think saying say 'my partner' is better, since this can work both ways," says a 23-year-old Jordanian national.
