"Inept," "uniquely dysfunctional," and headed for a "crash and burn" might be terms you're used to seeing tossed around Facebook arguments and reality shows, but that is how the ambassador from America's closest ally is describing the president of the United States in leaked memos, reports the Guardian. "We don't really believe this Administration is going to become substantially more normal; less dysfunctional; less unpredictable; less faction riven; less diplomatically clumsy and inept," wrote Kim Darroch. The memos date back to 2017, though a recent one claimed Trump was "dazzled" by his state visit to the UK in June, but that Britain could fall out of favor as the "flavour of the month" given that "this is still the land of America First."

A June 22 memo described the administration's Iran policy as "incoherent" and "chaotic,' and called malarkey on Trump's claim that he called off a missile strike because it risked civilian deaths. "It’s more likely that he was never fully on board and that he was worried about how this apparent reversal of his 2016 campaign promises would look come 2020," the memo read. Perhaps more damning is the fact that London appears to be defending Darroch's assessment, notes Politico. "The British public would expect our ambassadors to provide ministers with an honest, unvarnished assessment of the politics in their country," a rep for the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office said. "We pay them to be candid. Just as the U.S. Ambassador here will send back his reading of Westminster politics and personalities." (Trump once tweeted that he'd like to see someone else in Darroch's post.)
