UK Ambassador: Trump Committed 'Diplomatic Vandalism'

Sir Kim Darroch may be gone from the British embassy in Washington, DC, but it seems that President Trump may not soon be forgetting him: The BBC reports that the latest diplomatic leak from the UK is no less damning, with the former ambassador saying that Trump committed "diplomatic vandalism" in scrapping the Iranian nuclear deal—and that he did so to spite former President Obama. The leak was published in the Mail on Sunday, despite a warning from Metropolitan Police; Scotland Yard has launched a criminal investigation into the source of the leak. It reads in part: "The outcome illustrated the paradox of this White House: you got exceptional access, seeing everyone short of the president; but on the substance, the administration is set upon an act of diplomatic vandalism, seemingly for ideological and personality reasons - it was Obama's deal."

Darroch—who was writing to then-Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, who made a futile trip to attempt to convince Trump to stick with the deal—didn't stop there, saying that the administration had no backup plan in place when it pulled out of the nuclear deal: "Moreover, they can't articulate any 'day-after' strategy; and contacts with State Department this morning suggest no sort of plan for reaching out to partners and allies, whether in Europe or the region."
