President Trump thinks the United Kingdom's new prime minister will be "great," and the US ambassador to the UK seems to share similar optimism not only for Johnson's ability to, like Trump, "get things done," but also on the two leaders' future dealings. "The new relationship between [Johnson] and [Trump] … it's going to be sensational," Woody Johnson told the BBC's Today program. "Their leadership has a lot in common. Both have their own style but similarities—a clear vision of what they want to accomplish." Politico notes that the ambassador isn't concerned about how the "thin-skinned" Trump will take to the new PM, who in 2015 called the Republican candidate for president unfit for office and "betraying a quite stupefying ignorance."
Ambassador Johnson is shrugging off those old barbs. "I think the president is going to try to move the ball forward. ... We're going to have bumps in the road, no question, but we are two great countries." It's not clear when Trump and the new prime minister will meet, but the ambassador notes the UK-US relationship "is going to be increasingly important for this country and our country," making it therefore imperative to "look at the positives" rather than areas of contention. (On the flip side of those worrying about tensions between Johnson and Trump: those who fear the prime minister will "sell our country out to Donald Trump and his friends.")
