Charm City isn't exactly bothering to be charming after the president of the United States attacked Baltimore as a "very dangerous & filthy place" that is the "Worst in the USA” and a "rat and rodent infested mess." The Baltimore Sun pulled zero punches in responding to President Trump's attack on Rep. Elijah Cummings and his district in an op-ed subtly headlined "Better to have a few rats than to be one." Cummings has been a "thorn" for Trump, writes the Sun, "and Mr. Trump sees attacking African American members of Congress as good politics, as it both warms the cockles of the white supremacists who love him and causes so many of the thoughtful people who don’t to scream. ... Trump bad-mouthed Baltimore in order to make a point that the border camps are 'clean, efficient & well run,' which, of course, they are not—unless you are fine with all the overcrowding, squalor, cages and deprivation to be found."
But the Sun isn't the only one coming to the defense of both Cummings and Baltimore. A look around:
- Speaker of the House and Baltimore native Nancy Pelosi praised Cummings, per Sky News, saying that he's been a "champion in the Congress and the country for civil rights and economic justice, a beloved leader in Baltimore, and deeply valued colleague. We all reject racist attacks against him and support his steadfast leadership."
- CNN anchor Victor Blackwell is making waves with an impassioned and tearful cri de coeur for his hometown. Watch it here.
- Trump got a lecture from Jenna Bush Hager, who tweeted that "I taught in West Baltimore. I adore my kids, their parents, and grandparents. They all want the same thing I want for my kids: the chance for their children to have safe, happy and productive lives. Let’s think about the language we use, who it hurts."
