British Scientist Goes Missing on Greek Island

It's a story with echoes of one that made major news in July: A British scientist has been found dead after reportedly setting out for a run on a Greek island. CNN reports 35-year-old Natalie Christopher was vacationing on Ikaria with her partner. He woke up Monday to find her gone and called her; the Cyprus-based astrophysicist reportedly told him she was out running. But several hours later she was still gone, and he says she didn't answer subsequent phone calls he made. The Cyprus Mail reports the couple were due to leave the island Monday night. On Wednesday morning police on Twitter announced that Christopher's body had been found in a 65-foot-deep ravine in a "rough mountainous area."

A specialized police unit equipped with geolocating tools had been assisting with the search, reports the AP, which notes the ravine is near the area where Christopher's accommodations were. Indeed, the Guardian reports her body was found less than a mile from her hotel. It cites local media in reporting a large rock that may have come loose as she fell may have crushed her, but it's still unclear whether she slipped or something else befell her. An autopsy is planned. (An American scientist also vanished on a run in Greece recently and was found dead.)
