Barr Doesn't Mention Epstein, but Reassigns Prisons Chief

Attorney General Bill Barr has made another staff-related move in the wake of Jeffrey Epstein's suicide. Barr on Monday announced that federal Bureau of Prisons Acting Director Hugh Hurwitz would be removed from that role. Hurwitz will remain a part of BOP as assistant director of its Reentry Services Division. No reason was given. It was the second high-profile death under Hurwitz's watch, which began in 2018: Whitey Bulger was killed in October.

Dr. Kathleen Hawk Sawyer will be the new BOP head, and Dr. Thomas R. Kane has been appointed deputy director. The AP reports Hawk Sawyer was the BOP's director from 1992 to 2003, having first been nominated to do so during Barr's first run as attorney general. NBC News notes that Barr's statement does not mention Epstein.
