Gwyneth Paltrow was one of the first to come out against Harvey Weinstein when his alleged sexual harassment of women in Hollywood first started making headlines, and in a new book about those who broke the story, more details about her involvement is emerging. She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement, released Tuesday, is by New York Times reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, whose original article helped trigger the producer's downfall. "Gwyneth Paltrow was one of Harvey’s biggest stars," Twohey said on Today Monday, adding that Weinstein presented himself almost as a "godfather" to her. However, "Gwyneth was actually one of the first people to get on the phone" and help their investigation. As Deadline reports, Weinstein is now hitting back.
"Gwyneth Paltrow comes from Hollywood royalty. Her father was a top producer, her mother a famous actor, her godfather is Steven Spielberg," a Weinstein rep tells Deadline. "She didn’t need to make movies with Harvey Weinstein; she wanted to, and she won top awards and was the top paid female actor for nearly a decade, with Weinstein. Her narrative of her job being at stake is just gratuitous." The rep is referring to Paltrow's claim that after Weinstein tried to get her to massage him during the filming of Emma in 1994, he threatened her to keep quiet about the incident; she has said that at one point she was scared she would be fired. Weinstein's team has gone after Paltrow in a similar vein before, noting that she continued to work with Weinstein, even winning an Oscar for her role in Shakespeare in Love in 1998.
