Judge in Brock Turner Case Is Out of a Job Again

The man who lost his job as a judge over the sentence he doled out in the Brock Turner sexual assault case has just lost his followup job. But this one had nothing to do with the legal profession. Aaron Persky got hired to coach JV girls' tennis at Lynbrook High School in San Jose at the start of the school year, reports SFGate. The hire didn't get any attention at the time—the school says it was unaware of Persky's role in the Turner case—but that changed this week when a petition went up demanding Persky be fired, reports ABC7 News. On Wednesday, the school did just that. "We believe this outcome is in the best interest of our students and school community," says a school statement.

Persky, 57, became the first judge in California to be recalled in 80 years after he sentenced Turner to six months for sexually assaulting a young woman, saying at the time that he worried a longer sentence would have a "severe impact" on Turner's life. The former judge confirmed to NBC Bay Area that he'd been fired by the high school and said in a statement that the superintendent told him she was worried about the "potentially intrusive media attention" the players could be subjected to with him as coach. "Although I am disappointed with the District's decision, it was a privilege to coach the team, if only for a short time," he added.
