Martin Scorsese caused a bit of a hubbub two weeks ago when he weighed in on the superhero movie genre, offering his take that Marvel movies are emotionally and psychologically bereft and "not cinema." Now, Francis Ford Coppola, the director behind Apocalypse Now and the Godfather franchise, has put out his own perspective, and he's Team Marty on this one—and even surpasses the Goodfellas director in his scorn for Marvel flicks. Per the Guardian and AFP, the 80-year-old spoke to reporters in Lyon, France, over the weekend after being bestowed with the Prix Lumiere film award, and his response on caped-crusader cinema featured the same eye-rolling.
"When Martin Scorsese says that the Marvel pictures are not cinema, he's right, because we expect to learn something from cinema, we expect to gain something, some enlightenment, some knowledge, some inspiration," Coppola said. "I don't know that anyone gets anything out of seeing the same movie over and over again." Then, an extra-harsh jab: "Martin was kind when he said it's not cinema. He didn't say it's despicable, which I just say it is." Fans of superhero films aren't happy, including Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, per Variety. "Many of our grandfathers thought all gangster movies were the same, often calling them 'despicable,'" he wrote on Instagram. "Like westerns and gangster movies (and before that, just MOVIES), not everyone will be able to appreciate them, even some geniuses. And that's okay." (More Francis Ford Coppola stories.)
