A bill under consideration in Massachusetts could see a person thrown in jail for calling another person a "bitch." Critics on both sides of the aisle are questioning the act "regarding the use of offensive words," which Democratic Rep. Dan Hunt proposed be added to state law. "A person who uses the word 'bitch' directed at another person to accost, annoy, degrade or demean the other person shall be considered to be a disorderly person," reads the bill that landed before the Joint Committee on the Judiciary on Tuesday. Penalties would include a $150 fine for a first offense and a $200 fine or up to six months in prison after that, reports the Boston Herald. State Republicans are now mocking Democrats as "fearlessly taking on the biggest problems facing the commonwealth," per Boston.com.
Conservative political consultant Chip Jones sees the resolution as an attack on men since "bitch" is a common insult thrown at women. "Why are we only protecting 51% of the population from having their feelings hurt," he tells the Herald. "And the answer is, men have become second class citizens." The Massachusetts Gay and Lesbian Political Caucus, meanwhile, raises concerns about free speech. "While I detest the use of the B-word … I love the Constitution more and question the constitutionality of bills like this," says co-chairwoman Arline Isaacson. Hunt is holding strong, however, explaining he filed the resolution at a constituent's request. "While this specific instance may amuse some and alarm others, it remains a (sic) important process for self-representation," he says. (More Massachusetts stories.)
