The video is hard to watch, but it has a (relatively) happy ending: A couple is pushing a stroller across a busy Phoenix street when a Jeep runs a red light, nearly plowing into them. Instead, at seemingly the last possible moment, it plows into a car that entered the intersection on its own green light, as the apparently terrified couple runs to safety on the other side of the street. "An angel in the form of a Chevy Cruz may have saved the lives of a couple pushing a stroller through a Phoenix crosswalk at 53rd Ave & Indian School," the Phoenix Police Department wrote in a Twitter post revealing the incident Wednesday. "The innocent driver will be OK. The red-light runner was arrested for DUI."
It took place around 10pm on Oct. 14, and 12 News reports that after the crash, the 23-year-old alleged driver of the Jeep, Ernesto Otanez Oveso, and his female passenger allegedly took off running. A witness followed them and told Oveso to stop, at which point, police say, Oveso pulled a knife and attempted to stab the man through the driver's side window of his car. He missed, but police say he stabbed the driver's side rear door, and when police arrived in the parking lot, he was allegedly shoving the knife into his pocket. He faces both DUI and aggravated assault charges, and court documents show he had other warrants on record. Police also say they found a gun in his car; as a convicted felon, he is not allowed to own one. His female passenger has not been located. The 27-year-old driver of the Chevy Cruze suffered non-life-threatening injuries. (More Phoenix stories.)
