Tulsi Gabbard is one of the lowest-polling Democratic candidates for president, but that's not stopping her from nixing her current career for a possible ascension to the Oval Office. Per the New York Times, the Hawaii congresswoman announced Friday she won't be seeking a fifth term in the House of Representatives, putting out a statement and video in which she explains her move. "At this time when our country is so divided, and our world is moving ever closer to a nuclear holocaust ... I believe I can best serve the people of Hawaii and our country as your president and commander in chief," says the 38-year-old Iraq veteran and major in the Hawaii Army National Guard. She also notes "the world is in dire need of aloha," and that she "will lead with aloha—putting people ahead of profits, putting people ahead of politics, putting the well-being of our people and our planet above all else."
Some hint she may have halted her congressional aspirations due to the "serious primary challenge" against her by Kai Kahele, who the Times notes has accused her of forgetting about her Hawaiian constituents during her presidential run. Others, however, fear another agenda—one brought up last week by Hillary Clinton: that she's planning a third-party run. Gabbard, however, has denied that rumor and insists she's sticking with the Democratic party in her White House quest. Others speculate if Gabbard doesn't make it there, she has other options, considering her willingness to appear on Fox News programs and take often-contrarian stances to the Democratic party line, including on the Trump impeachment inquiry.
