At a Minnesota rally earlier this month, President Trump took a potshot at one of New Jersey's most famous sons, saying that to win the 2016 election, he "didn't need Beyonce and Jay-Z" or "little Bruce Springsteen." The Washington Post reports that an interview with "The Boss" aired Friday on CBS This Morning, with a conversation mainly focused on his new movie, Western Stars—but he and show co-host Gayle King took a pause from promotion to address Trump's recent attack. "You surprised that he's trash-talking you after all of this time?" King asked a chuckling Springsteen, who replied, "Not really. Anything's possible."
The 70-year-old musician then continued on that thought after King asked him about concern over the direction of the country. "It's just frightening, you know? We're living in a frightening time," Springsteen said. "The stewardship of the nation has been thrown away to somebody who doesn't have a clue as to what that means. And unfortunately we have somebody who I feel doesn't have a grasp of the deep meaning of what it means to be an American." The Post notes that while Springsteen has shied away from getting too involved in politics over the years, he hasn't been timid about expressing his views on Trump, going all the way back to before the 2016 election, when he told Rolling Stone in October of that year: "The republic is under siege by a moron, basically.
