NASA Shares Image of Halloween-ish Sun

Three days until Halloween, and NASA is reminding everyone by sharing an image of the sun doing its best impression of a jack-o-lantern. The space agency shared the image, taken Oct. 8 by its Solar Dynamics Observatory satellite, on Sunday, reports Fox News. "Even our star celebrates the spooky season," writes NASA. CNN explains that the photo is a result of certain regions of the sun burning more intensely than others.

"The active regions in this image appear brighter because those are areas that emit more light and energy," says NASA. "They are markers of an intense and complex set of magnetic fields hovering in the sun’s atmosphere, the corona. This image blends together two sets of extreme ultraviolet wavelengths … typically colorized in gold and yellow, to create a particularly Halloween-like appearance." (More sun stories.)
