President Trump ran into another legal setback Monday in efforts to keep his tax returns out of the hands of criminal investigators in New York. A federal appeals court declared that Trump's accountant must turn over the returns to the office of Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr., reports the AP. However, this won't be the final say in the matter: Trump's legal team has made clear it will appeal to the US Supreme Court, reports the Hill. In Monday's ruling, the appeals court rejected the notion that Trump is immune to criminal investigations because he's president.
"Presidential immunity does not bar the enforcement of a state grand-jury subpoena directing a third party to produce non-privileged material, even when the subject matter under investigation pertains to the president," declared the panel of three judges, all of whom were appointed by Democratic presidents. Vance is investigating payments Trump made to two women in the run-up to the 2016 election who claimed to have had affairs with him. (One of the women is Stormy Daniels.)
